Tourism Cares Global Impact

Goal

To support the launch of a new global social enterprise approach at America’s largest non-profit in the travel industry, to assist their work in Myanmar, Nepal, Peru, South Africa, Haiti, Jordan and Puerto Rico.

Award

A Multi-Year Grant was given to support the creation of a five-year strategic plan and research for Tourism Cares’ Global Partners Network, an affiliation program focused on underserved or post-disaster countries.

The CORA Foundation also supported the building of a living cultural museum of 28 local communities, and an initiative to remove all plastics from Machu Picchu and begin recycling in the Sacred Valley of Peru.

Rationale

Tourism Cares is the largest non-profit in the American travel industry, with a growing network that links this massive market to developing nations and social enterprises; creating measurable impact for local cultures and participating communities.

A delegation to Peru in 2018 resulted in the creation of a new nonprofit Turismo Cuida, based in Lima, and a 2018 Carlos Alberto Arrarte Global Treasures Fund. The efforts of Tourism Cares supported Plan Wallatan to become South America’s first 100% sustainable public private partnership in 2021, The Living Ancient Town, Ollantaytambo.

In 2018, the CORA Foundation (under its previous name TRIP) completed a two-year Social Investment Grant for a delegation of 100 business leaders to Jordan and the launch of an online directory of social enterprises, a “Meaningful Map” of Jordan.

The continued backing of the CORA Foundation is supporting exposure and change-making to social issues and needs in Jordan. Jordan borders Syria, Iran, Israel, and Saudi Arabia. From Amman to Petra, Wadi Rum and Aqaba, World Heritage sites, communities, and programs have been enhanced with hands-on exposure to the US travel market. Over time, more than 50 social non-profits will be developed, providing cross cultural understanding, economic income and jobs education to a vibrant, key destination in the Middle East.
